Roronoa Zoro fights with three swords at once, one in each hand and one in his teeth. Right now those three are Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu and Enma. Across the One Piece manga series and the anime he has carried five named blades and borrowed a handful more, and every one of them marks a step in Zoro's journey as a swordsman.
This is the full list of Zoro's swords in One Piece, every blade wielded by Roronoa Zoro, with what each one is called, how he got it and where it ended up. We also cover which Zoro sword replicas are worth owning, because we sell them.
What Swords Does Zoro Have Now, After Wano?
Zoro's current swords are the three he carries out of Wano and into the Final Saga.
- Wado Ichimonji, the white sword he has carried since he was a boy.
- Sandai Kitetsu, the red, cursed sword he won in Loguetown.
- Enma, the purple sword that once belonged to Kozuki Oden.
His 3 swords have not always been these three. Mihawk snapped two of his originals, one rusted away to nothing and one went home to Wano. Here is every blade, in order.
What Kind of Sword Does Zoro Use?
Zoro uses katanas, the curved, single-edged swords of the samurai. All three of his current katanas are meito, the famous named swords that One Piece ranks by grade, and two of them came from the same smith, Shimotsuki Kozaburo. Zoro wields them together in his three-sword style, and each new sword has marked his growth as a swordsman.
All of Zoro's Legendary Swords and Their Names
Zoro's iconic swords take their names from Japanese sword culture, and One Piece ranks most of them by grade. This is the quick version.
| Sword | Grade | How Zoro got it | Where it is now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wado Ichimonji | Great Grade | Given by Kuina's father, Koshiro | Still carried |
| Sandai Kitetsu | Grade | Free from Ipponmatsu in Loguetown | Still carried |
| Yubashiri | Skillful Grade | Free from Ipponmatsu in Loguetown | Rusted by Shu at Enies Lobby |
| Shusui | Great Grade | Won from Ryuma at Thriller Bark | Left in Wano |
| Enma | Great Grade | Given by Kozuki Hiyori in Wano | Still carried |
Wado Ichimonji, Zoro's White Katana
Wado Ichimonji is the sword Zoro will never give up. It originally belonged to Kuina, his childhood friend and rival at the dojo in Shimotsuki Village. After she died, her father Koshiro gave it to Zoro, who has chased his dream to become the world's greatest swordsman with unwavering resolve ever since.
It is one of the 21 Great Grade swords, forged by Shimotsuki Kozaburo, the same smith who made Enma. The look is plain and clean, with a white hilt, a white sheath and a gold guard. It was the only one of his swords to survive his first fight with Mihawk, and it is usually the blade he holds in his mouth.
Our Wado Ichimonji mini sword is £15.99, and it is where most Zoro collections start.
Sandai Kitetsu, Zoro's Cursed Blade
Sandai Kitetsu is the red one. Every Kitetsu sword is said to bring a horrible death to whoever owns it. In a Loguetown weapons shop the owner, Ipponmatsu, tried to warn Zoro off. Zoro threw the sword into the air and held his arm out underneath it. The blade spun down past his arm without leaving a mark, and Ipponmatsu was so impressed he gave it to him for nothing.
It is a Grade sword, the lowest ranked of the three Kitetsu blades, with a deep red sheath, a reddish brown wrapped hilt and a flame-like pattern running along the edge. Zoro continues to carry it today. Ours is the Sandai Kitetsu mini sword, also £15.99.
Yubashiri, the Sword Zoro Lost
Yubashiri came free in the same Loguetown deal. Ipponmatsu handed over his family heirloom after watching the Kitetsu test. It is one of the 50 Skillful Grade swords, with a black handle and a black lacquered sheath, and it is very light.
It did not last. At Enies Lobby the Marine captain Shu, who ate the Rust Rust Fruit, rusted it until it crumbled (chapter 426, episode 309). Zoro later laid it to rest with the Rumbar Pirates on Thriller Bark. The Yubashiri mini sword is the one fans forget, and the one that finishes a full Zoro display.
Shusui, Zoro's Black Sword
Shusui was the sword of the legendary samurai Ryuma. Gecko Moria stole Ryuma's body and his sword, and on Thriller Bark Zoro beat the zombie Ryuma, who handed Shusui over (chapter 467, episode 362). It earned its distinctive black blade over years of battle in Ryuma's hands.
Zoro does not have it now. Shusui is a national treasure in Wano. Gyukimaru returned it to Ryuma's grave, and Zoro agreed to leave it there in exchange for Enma. Our Shusui mini sword is the one to buy for the black sword Zoro carried after Thriller Bark.
Enma, Zoro's Strongest Sword
Enma is the most dangerous sword Zoro has carried. It originally belonged to Kozuki Oden and was made by Kozaburo, who rated it above even Wado Ichimonji. Oden used it to give Kaido his scar. Enma has immense power and a temper of its own. It pulls far more Haki out of its wielder's body than they mean to give, and it leaves weaker swordsmen drained dry.
Kozuki Hiyori gave it to Zoro on the condition that Shusui stayed behind (chapters 953 to 955). Taming Enma tested his ability to draw on Haki without being drained and pushed his mastery of Haki further than any sword before it. Zoro then used it to give Kaido a second scar. We stock three Enma mini swords, the classic lilac Enma, a white Enma and a black Enma, all £15.99.
The Swords Zoro Lost or Borrowed
Before Loguetown, Zoro carried his white sword and two plain katanas. Mihawk shattered those two at the Baratie (chapter 52, episode 24), in the fight that left the scar across Zoro's chest. After that he borrowed whatever was to hand.
- Johnny's and Yosaku's swords at Arlong Park, handed back after the fight.
- A Marine's sword at Enies Lobby after Yubashiri rusted, which Shu destroyed too.
- A short blade given to him for seppuku, which he used on the corrupt magistrate instead.
- Kamazo's scythe, pulled out of his own body and turned straight back on Kamazo.
One Piece Sword Grades and the 12 Supreme Grade Swords
In the world of One Piece, famous swords are called meito and sorted into grades, and the grades tell you how special each of Zoro's swords really is.
- Supreme Grade, the 12 best swords in the world.
- Great Grade, 21 swords. Wado Ichimonji, Shusui and Enma all sit here.
- Skillful Grade, 50 swords. Yubashiri was one.
- Grade, the lowest named rank. Sandai Kitetsu sits here.
Five of the 12 Supreme Grade blades have been identified. They are Mihawk's Yoru, Gol D. Roger's Ace, Whitebeard's naginata Murakumogiri, Shodai Kitetsu and Admiral Fujitora's Yakuza Kasen. These legendary weapons sit a full grade above anything Zoro has carried.
Zoro's journey to become the strongest swordsman means he has to surpass Mihawk, who holds the title, and his swords embody that climb. He started with two plain blades and Kuina's heirloom, and he now carries two Great Grade swords, one of them the best thing Kozaburo ever made.
Is Enma a Black Blade?
Not yet. A black blade, or kokuto, is a sword that has permanently turned black through its wielder's battles. Mihawk's Yoru and Ryuma's Shusui are black blades. Enma has not reached that stage. In Wano, Kozuki Sukiyaki tells Zoro that turning Enma into a black blade could raise its grade. Whether Zoro will achieve that remains unknown.
Why Does Zoro Use Three Swords?
Santoryu, Zoro's three-sword style, is the fighting style that makes him carry three swords at all. One goes in each hand and the third goes in his mouth, usually his white sword. He can fight with one sword (Ittoryu) and with two (Nitoryu), the style he started with as a boy.
Push him far enough and you get the Nine Sword Style, where his unyielding spirit shows up as Asura, three heads, six arms and nine swords. In Wano he added the King of Hell Three Sword Style, coating Enma in Haki and channelling Conqueror's Haki through all three blades.
The Real Katanas Behind Zoro's Anime Swords
The names of Zoro's swords have roots in real Japanese swordmaking. The Kitetsu blades appear to echo the work of Nagasone Kotetsu, an Edo period swordsmith whose famous blades were widely copied. Ichimonji was a real school of swordsmiths in the Kamakura period. Shusui means autumn water, an old poetic name for a clear, gleaming blade. Enma is the king of hell and judge of the dead in Japanese Buddhism, which tells you everything about that sword.
